Country in the Middle East

Destination Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey, a country between Europe and Asia located on the Anatolian peninsula in western Asia, with a small enclave in Thrace in the Balkan region of southeastern Europe.
Turkey is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea in south and east and by the Black Sea in north, by ArmeniaIran and Azerbaijan (exclave of Nakhchivan) in east, by Georgia in north east, by Bulgaria and Greece in north west, and by Iraq, and Syria in south east.
Turkey covers an area of 783,562 km², the country is more than twice the size of Germany or slightly smaller than the U.S. states of Texas and Louisiana combined.
Turkey has a population of 78,7 million people (in 2015), largest city is Istanbul, the national capital is Ankara, spoken languages are Turkish (official), Kurdish, and Arabic.

Turkey is a nation straddling eastern Europe and western Asia with cultural connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Cosmopolitan Istanbul, on the Bosphorus Strait, is home to the iconic Hagia Sophia, with its soaring dome and Christian mosaics, the massive 17th-century Blue Mosque and the circa-1460 Topkapı Palace, former home of sultans. Ankara is Turkey’s modern capital.
Major resorts include Antalya, a gateway to the southern Mediterranean area known as both the Turkish Riviera and the Turquoise Coast, and the Bodrum and Çesme peninsulas, both on the Aegean. Archaeological sites of note include the remnants of Troy and Pergamon, the Roman ruins at Hierapolis and, more extensively, the ancient city of Ephesus. The semi-arid central region of Cappadocia, especially Göreme, is known for “fairy chimneys” (tall, cone-shaped rock formations), Bronze Age cave dwellings that became early Christian churches and the Derinkuyu and Kaymakli underground cities. Pamukkale is known for its travertine hot springs.

When to visit

Many visitors arrive Jul–Aug, when calm, hot weather make this a prime time for beachgoing. Peak season for Istanbul and Cappadocia is Mar–Jun and Sep–Oct, when the weather is milder. Away from the coast, winter (Nov–Feb) is cold and often snowy. Major events include the Istanbul Film Festival (Apr), the Istanbul Music Festival (May–Jun), Izmir International Fair (Sep) and Republic Day (Oct 29). Anzac Day is celebrated at Gallipoli on Apr 25. Major religious holidays are Kurban Bayrami (varies) and Ramazan (varies).
